Joe Komodo is the founder of Komodo, a London based sustainable fashion brand producing a range of stylish clothing for men and women using the best Eco fabrics available. Joe decided to start the company following his travels around Asia where he became inspired by the culture and colours of Asia and passionate about creating an eclectic mix out of Eastern and Western design ideas.
Since the early 90’s Komodo has been a pioneer brand promoting the use and development of Organic Cotton, Hemp, Bamboo, Tercel and other natural fibres. Equally important was the welfare of the suppliers and people who work in small factory units that make their clothes. There needs to be loyalty and respect to make a good deal for all with factory visits made at least 2 months + each year to maintain a fair honest working relationship and to ensure any problems that may arise are taken care of. Garments are produced in factories in Kathmandu, Bali, India and more recently China. Many of these factories have been with Komodo since the early days and it is very rare that workers from these family run factories leave their jobs.
Komodo’s business ethics have always been a priority and it has always been important that products are manufactured in a way that is sensitive to the environment and that people involved in the manufacturing process are treated fairly. Recently Komodo have delighted in the fact that their main Nepali knit factory has switched to solar power after a few years of discussions! Overall Komodo is proud of the factories they work with, many of whom are GOTS certified. In addition, Komodo try to fund good projects they believe in with sustainable support and promote good practice to all those they can reach.
Joe says “It’s a privilege of our civilisation to dress up in comfort and style, but its also the responsibility of todays fashion designers to make that style fairly and sustainable for those who work on it – otherwise, you can only pretend it’s cool !”
