London based Riz Smith is the man behind British men’s swimwear brand Riz Fboardshorts, a range of stylish mens shorts with unique prints and sustainability at its core. A keen surfer and environmentalist, Riz spent a number of years designing swimwear and beachwear for various international brands, it was during this period of his career that he decided there had to be a way to design better swimwear. With this in mind, Riz along with his old school friend Ali decided to create a small, sustainable brand shaped around the aspiration of creating ‘The most beautiful and sustainable swim shorts in the world’.
There are three core elements central to Riz: Sustainability, Substance and Style. These principles are behind the philosophy of the Riz brand and are symbolised by the iconic inverted pyramid cut into the back of all waistbands. All shorts are made in Europe in genuinely small batches with every pair digitally printed in the England allowing the shorts to come to life with no limit to depth or colour. The shorts come with triple stitching for added durability and packaged by way of recycled boxes. A small collective of artists and illustrators are used to create prints that convey a ‘British-Hawaiian style’ that is unique to Riz Boardshorts. Themes generally feature endangered fish, flowers and insects with the hope of fostering awareness and inspiring more of an appreciation for nature.
With oceans being littered with plastics Riz Boardshorts are certainly doing their part to help the environment with every pair of shorts being produced from Eco-Friendly 100% recycled and recyclable fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. With the pioneering Rizcycle scheme old shorts can be returned for a discount off the next pair with the focus on giving the life of the product a perpetual 360 degree process. In a show of commitment to ocean conservation, Riz give back to the oceans through donating £1 from the sale of every pair of shorts to the Marine Conservation Society.
Riz firmly believe that true style lasts forever, inspired by Saville Row tailoring their shorts give an ‘old school’ feel that won’t go out of style anytime soon. At the same time they are able to maintain a contemporary edge by use of the latest recycled fabrics and digital printing techniques.
